A new law in Health and Safety Code 1596.866 requires the eight-hour Preventive Health and Safety
training to include instruction in lead poisoning prevention for child care licenses issued on or after July
1, 2020.
Some providers previously took the eight-hour Preventive Health and Safety training without
the lead poisoning prevention content, and are now trying to apply for a license. Providers in that
situation are allowed to take the lead poisoning prevention content as a separate, stand-alone class.
